Argentina has the worst farm policies in the world
Argentina is fertile and mostly temperate making it the third largest exporter of soyabeans and the second largest exporter of maize. Climate change is expected to hurt farmers in the North but increase rainfall, thus boosting yields of soyabeans, rice, and wheat in the south.
Argentina farmers are very tech savvy embracing things like genetically modified crops. Despite this, the farmers are continually hampered by the government which is capricious and unpredictable.
There are export quotas with certain crops. All crops face high export taxes. There are different exchange rates for US dollars based on the crop. Sometimes, farmers are forced to exchange for half of what their crop is worth. This has caused some farmers to hold onto their crops hoping the government changes course. You might think that farmers could just get their hands on US dollars but this is difficult if not impossible.
If the government of Argentina could get its house in order, annual grain output alone would increase by over 50%.
