52-Year-Old COLD CASE | Tom Long VANISHED | (Sonar Search & Recovery) Thomas Alfred Long, has been missing since the fall of 1969. Over the past year or so, Long’s surviving children and other relatives, using information they have picked up over the years from stories and rumors, have taken an interest in attempting to locate him with the help of a commercial diving group.

“I’ve spent my whole life just wondering. A lot of times, you just go about your life and forget about everything, but the question always comes back to you – I wonder what did happen?”

Gary Long, age 58 of McArthur, is one of nine children of Thomas Alfred Long and the late Louise M. (Watson) Long. Eight of the nine siblings are still living: Tom, Sue, Kathy, Bob, Linda, Gary, Scott, and Nancy. The fourth-oldest, Jim, or “Poog” as he was called, passed away approximately three years ago at the age of 58.

In the fall of 1969, when Gary was just six years old, his father went missing, leaving behind vague memories and a mystery that has yet to be solved.

“I don’t know if he left for work and didn’t make it there or if he left work and didn’t make it home,” Gary told The Telegram.

Thomas was an employee of the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad, Gary recalls. He worked all over the state and spent a great deal of time in Indiana as well, typically leaving on Sunday and coming back home on Friday evening. Following that one particular work week 52 years ago, however, Thomas never returned. #coldcase #vanished #missingperson

“From what I understand, he never picked up his last paycheck, so that’s kind of a red flag to me,” Gary said. “He was driving a new or close to new 1968 or 1969 Pontiac Catalina. I remember the car a little bit; it was a real shiny, bright red. When he disappeared, they never found him or the car – no sign or trace of either one.”
