Shanks Indoor Golf provides simulators for year-round play

Brett Wright, co-owner of Shanks Indoor Golf in Indianola, wants to help local golfers lower their scores and improve their game overall no matter what skill level and the season. Wright and Kip Fennelly, who are regular golfing buddies, want golfers to have fun with their indoor technology and data-driven video analysis system that features imaging of many famous golf courses.

Whether you’re interested in improving your golf game, want to keep playing in the off-season, or just have a fun indoor activity to do with friends, Shanks Indoor Golf offers simulators for every level of skill.

Brett Wright and Kip Fennelly, who are also regular golfing buddies, own the business. It’s located at 214 N. Howard Ave., off the town square on the south side of the True Value parking lot.

“In the wintertime, there’s not much to do in town here, recreational-wise, so this has been something I’ve been trying to work on the past few years, finding the location,” Wright said.

The business has two golfing stations set up at one time. Book your tee times online for one-, two-, three- or four-hour sessions. Come alone or golf in pairs or groups —ideal for date night, family time, students and serious golfers. Web site here https://shanksindoorgolf.com/ OR CALL 515-962-5473

“Basically, what golf simulators are, it’s a video game, but you are the actual controller. Our simulators have different programs where you can work on your actual golf game and how you’re hitting the ball, club speed, so forth like that,” Wright said. “But then we also have the simulator where you’re actually playing golf courses like you’re seeing on TV that the pros are playing. It is the most advanced simulator on the market.”

And best of all, you never have to worry about losing a golf ball, and walking is at a minimum.

A screen shows you the distance to the pin, if there is any wind, elevation change, etc. It also tracks smash factor, face to path, ball speed, face angle, club speed and club path, as well as back spin, launch angle, side spin and side angle. A camera allows you to see how you’re making contact with the ball.

Variety of the simulators keeps every session fresh.

“There are thousands of different golf courses in the system you can choose from, so you name the course, it’s in the system to play,” he said. “People who watch golf on TV, seeing the pros play, they’re going to come here and play those same courses. It’s very realistic to the yardage you’re seeing on TV.”

People can bring their own clubs, or browse what is available in-house, especially women’s and children’s clubs. While no food or beverage is served, you can bring your own.

Wright is also the owner of 515 Golf Cars and is an avid golfer. He said that while he’s played sports all his life, he didn’t take up golf until after he finished college.

It was the one sport where I couldn’t hurt myself anymore,” he said with a laugh. “Yet, I could still play competitively. What I love most is you’re in control and not relying on another player. You’re the one winning or losing.”

Shanks Indoor Golf will be open year-round. However, Wright anticipates it being at its busiest during cold weather, evenings and in the off-season.

It is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Sundays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Hours are subject to change based on what is most convenient for participants.
