The biggest theatrical hit last year in China was a film about killing American troops.

The Water Gate Bridge is the sequel to the Battle of Lake Changjin. It is a fictionalized retelling of the fighting at Funchilin Pass during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. It grossed $626 million in China making it the ninth highest-grossing film of 2022. The film was commissioned by the propaganda department of the Chinese Communist Party.
During the Korean War, UN forces were retreating to the 38th parallel as they were heavily outnumbered and surrounded by Chinese forces. UN troops stalled at Funchilin Pass after a bridge was blown out. The troops fought and broke through Chinese lines to escape the encirclement but suffered heavy casualties and loss of equipment. The pass was a chokepoint that saw some of the most intense fighting.
