SAN ANGELO, TX — Hold your horses, folks. The 7th Performance of the 91 Annual San Angelo Rodeo saw two new additions to the Top 5 in Barrel Racing, including a new leader. The Cowgirls steered their enthusiastic steeds through the barrel course in record time. Kalli McCall from Lufkin, Texas, burst onto the arena to post a Top 5 time with a 14.28. The Ladies heated up even more later on when the Garden City Cowgirl Jennifer Driver ran a near-perfect run to claim the top spot in the rodeo with a 14.22. The crowd saw another fiery performance during the Bull Riding. After two other Cowboys posted qualifying rides, three-time San Angelo Rodeo Champion Trey Benton III put an exclamation point on the 7th Performance on the last ride of the day. On the bull, “Just Another Gangster,” Benton showed the crowd why he’s won the San Angelo Rodeo three separate times. He posted an 88.5 to move into a tie for first place overall. The high-energy atmosphere could also be felt in the Mutton Bustin’. The top scores continued when Gretchen Gaetz from Seguin scored an impressive 91 on the back of her sheep. However, that score would not stand because San Angelo native Wrecker Williams scored a 92 when he latched on to his sheep and only let go when a bullfighter had to pull him off. San Angelo LIVE!’s Matt Trammell tracked down Wrecker after his impressive ride and asked the young man what helped him hold on so tight. It’s the Mutton Bustin’, presented by Sonora Bank.
