Joaquin Guzman or ‘El Chapo’ a nickname he received due to his small stature, it means Shorty, was hard up for work growing up in the rural farming town of Badiraguato, Sinalao raised in a ranch known as La Tuna. His destiny was to become that of a cattle farmer. The nearest school to his home was a full 24 hour journey by foot so he dropped out officially in the third grade. The eldest to many siblings Guzman protected his brothers and sisters from an abusive, alcoholic and troublesome father. He began growing and selling opium and marijuana as young as 9 and began learning the drug trade inside and out, working his way up to becoming the head of his native Sinaloa Cartel and from there the most powerful drug kingpin in Mexico and then the world. The man was gruesome in tactics notorious for having any smuggler shot in the head if they were late or attempted to drive up prices, regardless he is scene as a hero across Mexico and even has songs made in his honour.
