I’m sure since its the BBC channel a great deal of pertinent information pertaining to Orwell’s thinking and influences were obscured. It is interesting to not that while the man single handedly wrote some of the most extraordinary philosophical literature on the nature of tyranny and social systems tending to be self destructive. The prophetic 1984, along with Animal Farm being his best known works, he followed in a long wave of thinkers and writers such as Aldus Huxley (Brave New World) and H.G. Wells (The Time Machine, New World Order) who all imagined and wrote about dystopian 20th and 21st century futures filled with the domination of the tyrannical technocratic super state against the rights, liberties and sovereignty of the individual. This is further echoed in much of the science fiction writings of the 21st century, including televised fiction in the form of Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone which often explored themes of tyranny, ever expansion of the state and the ever diminishing value and protection of the individual mind.
