Titus Lucretius Carus was a Roman philosopher and poet. He lived around the year 100 BC. De Rerum Natura, On the Nature of Things, his major work, is regarded by some as the greatest Latin poetic masterpiece.
His poem, "De rerum natura," explains Epicureanism's ideas, including atomism and cosmology. Lucretius was the first Roman writer known to have written about Epicurean philosophy.
Lucretius discusses the basic ideas of atomism, the nature of the mind and soul, how sensations and thoughts work, and how the world and its things have changed over time, and he explains a wide range of celestial and terrestrial things. The universe described in the poem works according to these physical laws. It is guided by fortuna, which means "chance," not by the traditional Roman gods and the religious explanations of the natural world.
Lucretius was one of the first to think about what would become the study of evolution. He believed that nature experiments over eons, and the organisms that adapt best to their environment have the best chance of surviving. Living things survived because their strength, speed, or intelligence matched how their environment changed.
Before Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species came out in 1859, Lucretius' natural philosophy was one of the best examples of a non-teleological, mechanical explanation of how life began and evolved.
Poet Titus Lucretius Carus was a fearless pioneer and creative thinker deserving the title "philosopher" for his contributions to human knowledge. His ideas, especially his theories about evolution and naturalistic explanations of all natural phenomena, have had long and important effects on western science and philosophy.
He comes across as someone who takes great pleasure in nature, appreciating the outdoors and changing seasons. He believed in what Epicurus said, and it seems he died before his most important work, De Rerum Natura was finished.
