Cowgirls Rule, Cowboys Drool at the 2023 San Angelo Rodeo

SAN ANGELO, TX — When people imagine the San Angelo Rodeo, the Old West most likely comes to mind. The old Western movies featuring the likes of John Wayne or maybe even the famous outlaws like Billy the Kid or Jesse James, Westerns, and Cowboys go hand in hand. But the 91st Annual San Angelo Rodeo isn't just about the Cowboys roping and Bull Riding, but also the Cowgirls in the Barrel Racing and Mutton Bustin'.

Before we get into those Cowgirls, let's look at Steer Wrestling. Most of the Cowboys had a rough evening as they failed to put up a qualifying score after missing the steers completely and bouncing off the dirt. Several of the guys hit the ground hard, and not one made the top 12. The Concho Valley had great representation in Slammer Powers from Sonora and Tyler West of Mertzon. Neither Powers nor West managed to score quickly enough for the Top 12, but it's always great to see local guys compete in major rodeos.

The Barrel Racers had stiff competition as no one from the 5th performance threatened the Top Four on Thursday night. However, one Cowgirl broke into the Top 12. Madison McFall from Columbia, Tennessee, finished her run in 14.46 seconds, good enough for 8th place.

If anyone needs additional proof that these girls are tough, 7-year-old Mutton Buster Cheyanne Coates from Wall scored a fantastic 88 points. She beat out every single boy on Thursday night to win herself a Belt Buckle. San Angelo LIVE!'s Matt Trammell talked to Coates and asked her why the girls were better than the girls tonight.
