Before Mike Tyson was the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world winning 8 heavyweight championship titles.

Before engaging in multiple legal battles over wrongful termination, assault, domestic violence and rape the latter of which still haunts him today.

Before blowing through a 300 million dollar fortune.

Before taking a bite out of Evander Holyfield.

Before retiring from boxing to spend more time with his pigeons.

… and long before he opted for one heck of a facial tattoo Mike Tyson was born in Brooklyn New York, the youngest of three in a low income family. Tyson grew up in a rough neighbourhood, and because he was constantly fighting and breaking the law he had been arrested 30 times by the age of 13.

During a stint in reform school, Tyson met Bobby Stewart, a juvenile counselor, who saw Tyson’s true potential as a boxer. When Mike was released, Stewart introduced him to famous boxing trainer Cus D’Amato (Da-Mah-toe).

By the age of 16 Tyson had won not one but two junior Olympic gold medals in boxing. At 18 he began his professional boxing career and at 20 years old Tyson beat the record for the youngest heavyweight champion, a record he still holds to this day.

For the first 5 years of his career he never lost a fight, making Mike Tyson one of the most recognized and feared names in sports. He married the beautiful actress, Robin Givens and had multiple endorsement deals with Kodak, Pepsi, Suntory Dry and Nintendo.

But things can’t stay that good forever, and by the end of the 80’s Tyson found himself getting deeper and deeper into trouble. His marriage was crumbling, he fired his trainer and manager, and Tyson’s drug use and spending were spiralling out of control.

It would come to a head in 1991 when Tyson was arrested for the rape of an 18-year-old beauty queen. He was sentenced to six years in prison but was released early in March 1995. He was back in the ring only 5 months later.
