Craftsman-style are still very much in demand and have features like open floor plans that are great for resale value. There will often be an open living room that connects to a dining or multi-use space with a kitchen near the rear of the house. Although open floor plans dominate housing construction now, Craftsman style home incorporated them before it was cool. However, low ceilings that conserve heat may not be desirable these days.
Craftsman-style homes are a style that emerged in the early 20th century that focused on simplicity, functionality, and natural materials. It was defined by quality workmanship and was the result of an evolution of the Arts and Crafts Movement. This movement would lead to Craftsman homes. The Arts and Crafts Movement evolved in the early 1900s and was a response to the Industrial Revolution’s mass-produced aesthetics. The Arts and Crafts Movement rejected poorly made products as well as Victorian designs. Victorian homes were built to display advances in manufacturing and industry. In contrast, Craftsman-style homes were defined by roof arches, front porches, and quality woodwork interiors. As someone that grew up with a front porch, this is the most appealing element to me.
Internal elements included open floor plans, natural colors and materials, and earth tones, but some incorporated bright colors. External elements included wood siding, brick and stucco accents, multi-pane windows, and exposed rafters. Craftsman style homes tend to be small and medium size.
While the Craftsman style is often associated with bungalows, not all bungalows are Craftsman-style homes.
The Arts and Crafts movement also gave rise to the Prairie School founded by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Even today, Craftsman-style homes are one of the most popular American home styles. They do well on the real estate market as buyers are drawn towards them.
