Dr Richard Amerling: An American Frontline Doctor Speaks Out

Dr Richard Amerling was born and raised in New York City. He graduated from City College of New York and studied medicine at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, graduating with honors in 1981. He completed a medical residency at the New York Hospital Queens and a nephrology fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine for Internal Medicine and Nephrology. After 26 years as an academic nephrologist at the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City he accepted a position as Professor of Clinical Skills at St. George’s University in Grenada.
He has written and lectured extensively on nephrology and health care issues, is a past president of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons AND is currently Associate Medical Director of America’s Frontline Doctors.
As author or co-author, his work has been published in peer-reviewed medical journals, including the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. He is a frequent contributor to the letters page of The Wall Street Journal, and has published many Op-Eds on healthcare economics and politics.

He has developed a reputation as an unconventional thinker, and has campaigned against the growing trend of standardized practice via guidelines. His clinical practice stresses achieving good health through diet and lifestyle modifications, and shuns the “treat-by-numbers” approach that perpetuates ill health and poor outcomes.

In 2003, along with British nephrologist Dr. Roger Greenwood, Amerling founded the Kidney Stones, a classic rock band that continues to perform at various medical conferences around the world.
