On Wednesday, the Department of Justice announced it has reached a $144.5 million agreement in principle to settle with victims of the 2017 Sutherland Springs church mass shooting. A federal court in Texas concluded the U.S. government is liable for damages, ruling the Air Force failed to exercise reasonable care when it did not submit the shooter’s criminal history to the FBI’s background check database. The shooter served nearly five years in the Air Force before being discharged for bad conduct.
