Undoubtedly, the most famous monument of Ephesus, the Celsus Library, the M.S. It was built between 100 and 110 by Gaius Julius Aquila for his father, Senator Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemeanus. The library should be understood as a heroon built over the burial chamber of the deceased.
The main library hall could be reached from the main hall, where a nine-step staircase with pedestals of statues on both sides led. The edicular architecture of the ornate façade contrasts with the brick building technique used in the building's interior, although the floors and walls are covered in marble. RS. The library was destroyed by an earthquake around 270 and has not been rebuilt since. In late antiquity, the remains of a richly decorated façade were used as the back wall of a street fountain.
