LONG ISLAND RAILROAD IS SELLING OFF THE MAIN LINE!!!

In a page from the post-war railroading playbook of circa 1950, the LIRR appears to be selling off parts of their main line, which have apparently been deemed expendable. Unfortunately (and very much in keeping with the pattern of last century's now-freight-only carriers) they are not. The post-war US railroads didn't stop at dumping crucial real estate though, but threw in a few giant orders of brand new 'lightweight' passenger cars as well, with a lot of what was built for the Burlington and New York Central ending up in Mexico and South America.
