Protests of bus drivers in Lagos

At the end of last week, protests by bus drivers against illegal extortion by criminal gangs took place in several districts of Lagos State.

The protesters blocked sections of the Lagos — Abeokuta highway, calling on local authorities to deal with "agberos" — bandits demanding contributions from drivers for the possibility of transporting passengers.

Similar protests occur regularly in Nigeria, but all attempts by law enforcement officers to deal with illegal extortion have so far failed.

Instead, the Government compensates the injured drivers from time to time, while the "agberos" continue their criminal activities on the streets of Lagos.
