Anton LaVey was an American author and occultist who was the founder and High Priest of the Church of Satan. Born in Chicago in 1930, LaVey was a self-proclaimed atheist and a firm believer in individualism and free will. He wrote the seminal work The Satanic Bible in 1969 and is widely credited with ushering in the contemporary religion of Satanism.

LaVey had a deep interest in the occult, supernatural, and mysticism, and was heavily influenced by the philosophies of Friedrich Nietzsche, Ayn Rand, and Aleister Crowley. He also had a strong interest in psychology, and used its principles to shape his own unique philosophy and ideology. His teachings were largely concerned with individualism, self-expression, and the exploration of the darker sides of human nature.

LaVey was a highly controversial figure in his lifetime, and his death in 1997 only served to increase his notoriety. His legacy lives on in the Church of Satan, an international organization with members in numerous countries around the world. His work and teachings continue to inspire millions of people, and his unique blend of philosophy, psychology, and the occult make him one of the most important figures in the history of occultism.
