How Chris Hemsworth's character in the Disney+ series Limitless demonstrated how fasting might prolong life by preventing "zombie cells"
Hemsworth, who plays Thor, fasted for five days to attempt to stay young, and studies on mice suggest that intermittent and periodic fasting may help prevent disease and mortality.
This has to do with starving senescent cells that "infect" healthy ones as they age, but it's still unclear how to fast safely.

actor in Thor For his Disney+ TV show Limitless, in which he examines various ways humans might live better for longer by taking on physical challenges, Chris Hemsworth fasted for five days in an effort to stay youthful.
The severe challenge was founded on the scientific hypothesis that fasting prevents the harmful discharges from supposedly "dead cells" from spreading, which speeds up aging. But does it really function?
Damaged cells that have undergone senescence, or degradation due to aging, and are no longer useful are referred to as zombie cells. These cells "infect" healthy cells with proteins and inflammatory chemicals, which causes them to become senescent as well. This is different from dying off. The aging process is accelerated by this.
A 2011 study indicated that getting rid of these senescent cells "forestalled many of the ravages of age." The study was published in the British scientific journal Nature.

Since this initial finding, studies on mice have proved that senescent cells build up in aging organs and that removing them can treat or even prevent several diseases.

In mice, it has been demonstrated that eliminating these cells increases lifespan, improves fitness, and renal function. One way to prevent zombie cells from releasing these dangerous chemicals is to fast.
The benefits of intermittent fasting: "It isn't a diet, it is a lifestyle"

Animals obtain glucose from food, which powers the body's trillions of cells, including zombie cells. These injured cells can be kept from secreting damaging proteins and chemicals by cutting off the glucose supply. In turn, this slows down the aging process and wards against conditions like cancer, dementia, and arthritis.
However, studies have only been done on rodents, thus it is yet unclear how fasting affects human aging.
We are aware that most animals will live far longer if we feed them less food than they would typically consume. Because age is the main risk factor for a wide range of diseases, the goal of this kind of research is to keep animals healthy for longer, according to Colin Selman, a professor of biogerontology at the University of Glasgow in Scotland.

Research on mice have revealed that restricting their food consumption or giving them food more quickly has advantages as well.
There are numerous trials where mice are fed every other day or have access to food limited for 24 hours. However, there is evidence from certain research that eating the same quantity of food you typically would but over a shorter period of time on the same day has positive impacts as well, according to Selman.

However the effects on individuals and the study of the link between fasting and slowing the aging process are still quite young.
"In general, the facts would lead you to believe that eating less food is good for your health. But because fasting has so many impacts, it's hard to explain exactly how that's accomplished and if it would be done by eliminating these zombie cells," Selman says.
Senescent cells, although being given the moniker "zombie cells," do serve a useful purpose in the body. Senescence is a process that prevents the spread of harmed, altered cells.
