Is drag an important part of Indian culture?

Drag as an art form has existed in our country since the dawn of time. There have been instances where men have dressed up as women and performed in the courts of our kings, queens, and even Gods. Men wear elaborate costumes and make-up to perform as women in Indian traditional folk and classical dances, and vice versa.

What can you tell us about your drag avatar?

Rani Ko-He-Nur, my drag queen avatar, is an eclectic super queen who believes in diversity and performs everything from jazz, hip-hop, pop, R&B, Bollywood numbers, semi-classical, and folk. She does high kicks in short skirts and cartwheels in sarees while singing without missing a note.

What is the backstory of Rani Ko-He-Nur?

I had the honour of performing alongside some internationally acclaimed pop culture icons, and I am grateful to Keshav Suri for this opportunity. He only gave me this name and told me I had to go by Rani Ko-He-Nur. The Kohinoor is spelt with 'He' in my drag name because when Rani comes out of drag, she becomes Sushant, and He is the one who is responsible for embodying Rani.

You had performed as your drag avatar in the SaReGaMaPa show. What was the reaction?

I was able to break down several barriers thanks to Rani. I broke the glass ceiling so that the LGBTQ+ community's queens and performers are respected and not just used for comic relief or as a joke.

Rani Ko-He- Nur and Sushant Divgikar. How do you deal with them both?

It can be difficult at times. Many people refer to me as Rani when I'm Sushant and Sushant when I'm dressed as Rani. It's quite amusing, but I'm never annoyed by it.

What was your initial reaction when you learned that you had been chosen for the Forbes Asia 30 under 30 list?

I literally fell to the ground and cried like a baby when I found out I was on the list, because I'd had to go through a lot to get here. It hasn't been an easy road, but it has been worthwhile.

Tell us more about your fashion sense.

My personal style is very eclectic. I'm not tied to any one look or fashion trend. Because I like to try new things, you might see me at an event wearing a T-shirt and joggers one day and a three-piece suit the next. Sometimes I wear a ganji and shorts, and other times I wear a dhoti-kurta.

How are you spending your time during this period of solitude?

My mother forbade me from entering the kitchen after I nearly burned down the house. This isn't such a big deal for me because I survived Bigg Boss Season 8 for two months. I believe that everyone should adhere to the lockdown and practise social distancing.
