------------------

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Allah said: Whoever shows hostility to a friend of Mine, I have declared war upon him. My servant does not grow closer to Me with anything more beloved to me than the duties I have imposed upon him. My servant continues to grow closer to Me with extra good works until I love him. When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask something from Me, I would surely give it to him. Were he to ask Me for refuge, I would surely grant it to him. I do not hesitate to do anything as I hesitate to take the soul of the believer, for he hates death and I hate to displease him.”

The hadith starts by giving fear, it starts off by saying "Whoever shows hostility to a friend of mine I have declared war upon him!" It is a powerful way to start, it gathers all the attention of the listener or reader because who would want to be at war with Allah!? So they then are curious about who is that loved one? So instead of telling us who is that loved one that we should avoid hostility toward Allah tells us how to be that loved one, how to be the friend of Allah!

The word used for friend is Wali comes from the root Walaya, it means love, loyalty, closeness, devotion and dedication.

Imam Ghazali divides worshippers in categories, we will divide them in three categories.

- Traders

The ones who do good deeds to gain something from Allah.

-Workers

The ones who worship Allah, to gain Jannah and to protect themselves from Hellfire as per required.

-Lovers

The ones who worship Allah due to the love they have for Allah, the fear they have of Allah, the love they have for the reward they gain from worship by Allah not because it is a reward but because it is from Allah, the Jannah they will get not because it's Jannah but because it's mercy and Justice of Allah.

An example of this would be of Asia(A.S) whos last words before death were "Oh Allah! Grant me a house in your presence in Paradise.

Most of the people are unaware and far from this spiritual reality of Islam due to the materialistic and secular society.

Allah is very close to us but we are far from Allah.

So how can we be the beloved of Allah, how can we die with the love of Allah. How to be both lover and beloved of Allah!?

- Obligation, there is nothing more beloved to Allah than fulfilling the obligations, trying best to perfect those obligation and have effect that those obligations are supposed to have on our character.

-Extra, when we have already succeeded in fulfilling the obligations then for the love of Allah we should do extra, that extra in this day and age could be anything! Specially Sunnah.

-Dikhr, the love that we feel from dikhr will push us to do nightly prayers.
-Be of service to people, help them, build a good character and be an example for people.
-To be away from haram

And once you do this

"When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. "

What you hear will be for the sake of Allah, what you see will be for the sake of Allah, your strength, your hand will be used for the sake of Allah, you will walk for the sake of Allah. Your life will revolve around the love and worship of Allah and then Allah will protect you, Allah will grant you refugee.

And this should be the goal, vision and purpose of our life, to live to become and die as the beloved of Allah!
