1965 Monon Bell Memory: 'Operation Frijoles'

November 13, 1965, Greencastle, Ind. - A Wabash College student posing as a visiting foreign dignitary stole the Monon Bell from the DePauw University campus, and even though it was eventually returned to Greencastle, it didn't stay for long. This afternoon, the visitors from Crawfordsville reclaimed the prize of the rivalry, 16-6. Wabash tailback John May rushed for 137 yards to lead the Little Giants to victory.
DePauw had held the Monon Bell (thievery aside) since winning the 1955 contest on a thrilling, last-second field goal by Fred Williams.
This piece includes a reference to the DePauw performance by the Isley Brothers with Jimi Hendrix.
