General Pervez Musharraf is a retired four-star general of the Pakistan Army who served as the Chief of Army Staff and later as the 10th President of Pakistan from 1999 to 2008. He seized power in a bloodless military coup in 1999 and ruled Pakistan as both a military and civilian leader until his resignation in 2008. During his tenure as President, he implemented significant economic and social reforms and also played a key role in the US-led war against terrorism following the 9/11 attacks. However, his regime was also criticized for its authoritarianism, human rights abuses, and suppression of political opposition. After resigning from office, Musharraf went into self-imposed exile and has since faced a number of legal challenges, including treason charges in Pakistan.
