Aussie Cossack makes an outrageous offer to the U.S. Government after Russia detains WSJ reporter in first spy charges against U.S. journalist since Cold War. Whilst there is no “written law” or open policy about nations swapping prisoners, from time to time a case appears which makes it seem very likely that countries do engage in this practice in some capacity depending on the circumstances. Aussie Cossack took to the Russian news to propose himself in exchange for accused spy Wall Street Journal journalist Evam Gershkovich.

The Biden administration condemned the detention of a Wall Street Journal reporter in Russia for what Moscow described as espionage, the first such case of an American journalist detained for allegations of spying since the Cold War.

The arrest of 31-year-old Evan Gershkovich, a Russian speaker whose parents came to the U.S. from the Soviet Union, marked the latest diplomatic flashpoint between Moscow and Washington. The two countries, already on opposite sides of a war in Ukraine, have also clashed over the arrests of each other’s citizens and the state of nuclear arms treaties.

Aussie Cossack's lawyer Mr Davis confirmed that Boikov applied for Russian citizenship and had been granted assylum at the Russian consulate under the protection of the Russian Government.

He said he is currently in the process of dealing with the arrest warrant and having it resolved “promptly”.

Mr Boikov has amassed nearly 230,000 followers across his social media accounts, which include YouTube, Telegram and Facebook.
