Both this world and the next
are adrift within the soul.
The body hidden in the soul,
the soul secreted in the body
-- each is lost inside the other.
Emerge from your confusion,
find the inner seat of your humanity.
There, a single breath will fill you
with the answer to a hundred mysteries.
But if you waver in the Path,
lamentation will swallow you from head to toe.
Keep vigil at night and fast during the day,
until yearning for knowledge
surfaces within you.
Yearn and seek until everything,
even the yearning itself, evaporates.
~ Attar of Nishapur
---
Attar, also known as Fariduddin Attar, was a prominent Persian poet, mystic, and scholar who lived in the 12th century. He was born in Nishapur, Iran, around 1145 CE and lived during the Seljuk Empire's reign. Attar was a pharmacist by profession, but he devoted himself to poetry and spiritual pursuits.
Attar is famous for his works in Persian literature, including his masterpiece, The Conference of the Birds. This book is considered a classic of Sufi literature, and it tells the story of a group of birds who journey to find their king, the Simurgh. The story is an allegory for the Sufi path, and it teaches readers about the challenges and joys of spiritual transformation.
In addition to The Conference of the Birds, Attar wrote many other works, including Asrar Nama ("The Book of Secrets"). His works are characterized by their mystical and allegorical nature, and they often explore themes of love, faith, and spirituality.
Attar's influence on Persian literature and Sufi thought is significant. He inspired many other poets and writers, including the famous Persian poet Rumi, who considered Attar his spiritual master. Attar's legacy continues to inspire people all over the world, and his works are still read and studied by scholars and enthusiasts of Persian literature and Sufism.
