This unrestored original 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS with an impressive LS6 454 engine is generously on loan from the Wellborn Musclecar Museum in Alexander City, Alabama.
This Chevrolet SS Chevelle was not equipped with the usual 360 horsepower 454 LS5. It was purchased with the LS6 version of the Chevrolet 454 designated RPO Z15, and produced 450 horsepower, 500 lbs.-ft. of torque.
Even though the LS6 used the same block as the LS5, The LS6 had an 800-Cfm Holley four-barrel bolted to an aluminum intake manifold. This was lighter and gave more airflow than the LS5's 750-cfm Rochester Quadra Jet. The LS6 also had four-bolt mains, a forged steel crankshaft, and connecting rods. It came with 11.25:1 compression forged aluminum pistons.
Due to new Federal emission standards, the LS6 came with the primitive Air Injection Reactor pump (A.I.R.) with pipes plumbed into the tops of the exhaust manifolds that injected additional air into the exhaust system. This reduced hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. This was one of the first items usually removed by owners. Fortunately, this Chevelle was purchased by Ivan Schildern from the original owner. He meticulously maintained this awesome Chevelle Super Sport and its LS6 engine in its original condition till his death in 2004. You can still see all the original components in the engine bay even the complete A.I.R. system.
Buying an LS6 Chevelle wasn’t cheap. It required a $503 RPO Z15 SS 454 package. This was actually a pretty nice package consisting of bright engine accents, dual exhaust with bright tips, a black painted grille, wheel opening moldings, power front disc brakes, special rear suspension, and F70 x 14 tires on 7-inch rims. The rear bumper had a black insert while up front the SS got a “power bulge” hood aka Cowl induction hood. Also part of the package was the base 360-horse LS5 with a heavy-duty battery. This allowed the buyer selected the RPO LS6 454 engine that cost an additional $263.30 which of course needed a heavy-duty transmission, either an M22 Manual aka "the rock crusher" ($221.80) or M40 automatic aka TH400 ($290.40) This all added at least an additional $988 to a base price of just over $2,800. Rear gear choices were as much as 4.33:1 ratio some with factory limited-slip differential. With a few other options, the SS 454 Chevelle was likely to be over $4000.
This Chevelle must have had the optional deluxe interior because the standard interior featured a bench seat regardless of transmission choice. When the optional bucket seats were ordered, the attractive center console that you can see in this Chevelle was also available. The 1970 SS Chevelle received a different instrument panel setup than the base Chevelle or Malibu models. You may recognize the panel from the newer Monte Carlo. It featured three large circular gauges for the tach, speedometer, and clock with smaller gauges flanking them. To the right were the HVAC controls, the radio and lighter.
The exterior of the SS 454 Chevelle featured easily recognizable lines and curves with a Cowl Induction hood. The blacked-out grille was split horizontally with a large SS emblem in the center.
