France: Police arrest several suspects over shooting during protest in Paris - 30.03.2023

French police arrested several suspects after shots were fired during a demonstration at the City Hall in the French capital, as dozens of police officers were deployed through Paris on Thursday evening. Footage shows police searching for the suspect who was on the run and later arrested three men. Eyewitnesses told Ruptly that a shooter was among the protesters when he started shooting in the air several times, before reloading and shooting again. "There was a demonstration. We were all grouped together. After a while, on the street that makes the corner on the right, after a while, I saw the man, he pointed [his gun] at a lady. He pointed [his gun] at a lady. Then, he put his gun in the air, he started shooting and it scared us and we started running down in this street," said Jasin, an eyewitness, adding "And then, he started to come to that street and he restarted to shoot in the air again. So then we got scared, we ran. We knocked on the bar next door. And we ducked into the bar. We just came out of the bar and I'm telling you, I was really very scared." "The situation heated up a bit and the individual took out a gun and started to advance towards the people he was insulting and shot at the ground. There is a bang, he grabbed on with another person. It's all a bit of a blur to me. Then, he turned back. He shot in the air. He shot a second time in the air in the street," Benoit, an eyewitness who refused to show his face, said. "And then, the CRS (French riot police) arrived. The CRS ran in here to secure. They went to the street to find out where he was. They went to the wrong place and we asked them to move back because we knew roughly where it was. And then, everything went on," he continued. Thousands of demonstrators gathered in front of the City Hall in Paris on Thursday to protest police violence.
