My leaf springs are cracking in half? WTF?

Ok guys, I am no expert. But I do know 5160 is used all the time for knives. I cut a 4” piece. I welded it to a good handle and I forged it out to to about 6+inches. It’s weird that it cracked in half. I never let the color get below orange.
