Domesticated Felines and the Common Ringworm
Even though cats are common house pets, not many people know that they can get ringworm, a common fungal infection. Cats and people are both susceptible to the fungus that causes ringworm. Circle- or ring-shaped, red, scaly spots appear on the skin. Your feline buddy won't die from this, but it's important to treat it since it can be uncomfortable if left untreated.
The good news is that there are measures you can take to prevent your cat from ever contracting ringworm. By taking care of their hair regularly, you can lower the chance that they will get a fungal infection. Be careful to take them in for routine examinations with the vet so that any health issues may be caught before they become life-threatening.
Don't freak out if you think your cat has ringworm; there is medication available. According to the severity of the illness, your vet may recommend a topical treatment, oral medicine, or even surgery. Keeping your living space clean will make it less likely that this illness will spread to your other housemates, whether they are people or animals.
In sum, keep in mind that even indoor cats might get sick from time to time; yet, there is plenty we as pet owners can do to keep our feline pets safe. Get to a doctor today if you're worried that yours has contracted this or something similar.
