Niccolo Machiavelli was an Italian Renaissance political philosopher and statesman who served as secretary of the Florentine republic. His most well-known work, The Prince (Il Principe), earned him a reputation as an atheist and an immoral cynic. He was born in Florence, Italy, on May 3, 1469, and died there on June 21, 1527.

Machiavelli had a number of positions in the government beginning at the age of 29, when he was appointed in charge of the republic of Florence's foreign affairs in governed areas. He was tasked with creating a militia, going on military and diplomatic missions, managing fortifications, and penning an official history of the republic, among other things.

Discourses on Livy (1531) and The Prince (1532), both of which were released following Niccol Machiavelli's passing, are his two most significant works. Florentine Histories (1532) and The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca are just two of the numerous works he produced (1520).

Machiavelli does not appear to have identified as a philosopher; in fact, he frequently publicly rejected philosophical research as irrelevant. His credentials also do not indicate that he would easily fit into conventional frameworks of academic philosophy.

His writings are infamous for being frustratingly illogical, contradictory, and occasionally self-contradictory. Instead of applying rigorous logical analysis, he instead draws on experience and examples. Nonetheless, there are valid arguments for listing Machiavelli as one of the greatest political theorists, some of which are found within his own works.
