While the memories of the spy balloon floating across our country are still fresh in our minds, and calls for TikTok’s ban is this week’s latest headline, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Beijing’s use of intelligence gathering on the U.S. In fact, in 2021, the Center for Strategic & International Studies – the CSIS -- a think tank in Washington, DC - compiled a list of 160 incidents of Chinese espionage directed at the US since 2000. And that was in 2021 so it doesn’t include all the more recent incidents that we’ve heard about.

And what you’re feeling is true, Chinese spying is on the rise – with 76% of those incidents happening in the last decade. And it’s understated because the CSIS noted that its list was derived from open-source material and likely didn’t comprise the actual total number of incidents happening. Not only that but since Xi Jinping took over, more than half of these incidents occurred under his watch – or should I say direction.

So what are the Chinese doing? Well we all know they’re hacking our computers, and using satellites and balloons to suck up imagery, but I’m going to go old school and talk about the HUMINT side of things –HUMINT of course meaning HUMAN INTELLIGENCE. PEOPLE SPIES.
Let’s start with secret agents. In 2020, then-US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo – a West Point grad I might add – said that the Chinese Consulate in Manhattan was being used as a major hub of Beijing’s espionage program. “They’re engaged in activities where they’re crossing the line from normal diplomacy to the kinds of things that would be more akin to what spies are doing,” he said at the time.

Here’s one of my favorites. The honeypot trap. Right out of the ancient Chinese strategems. Back then it was called the “beauty trap” but it still works just as well. Honey trapping is the use of romantic or sexual relationships to glean information or influence over their target. And let’s face it. Men are stupid. We fall for this every time, and we always will.

So let’s talk about Fang Fang. She was a Chinese spy that cuddled up with Rep. Eric Swalwell of California. Fang, also known as “Christine Fang,” was a Swalwell fundraiser who also helped place at least one intern in his office. Why Swalwell? Well he was a key member of the House Intelligence Committee – who knows what pillow talk happened in between massages.

Finally, the one I’m most concerned about. Our southern border.
It’s been clear for some time that we have no southern border. Thanks to the Biden administration we’ve opened the door wide open for anyone and everyone to come on through. And that includes the Chinese. In fact, according to the Customs and Border Protection – the CBP, the number of Chinese migrants illegally crossing into the US during the last three months of 2022 skyrocketed by over 700% compared to the same period a year earlier.

The CBP apprehended 1,862 Chinese nationals trying to cross the US-Mexico border during the last quarter of 2022 compared to 229 during those same months in 2021. And the number of Chinese nationals illegally crossing into the US this fiscal year, which kicked off in October, is set to eclipse the total number caught in the entirety of 2022. Most of those caught are single adults. Single male adults. Fighting age male adults. Spying age male adults.

So where does this leave us? The answer. In trouble.
You see, while we the people have become a society of instant gratification, the Chinese on the other hand are patient.
As the ancient Chinese stratagem goes … “Wait at leisure while the enemy labors”
