Year-end tax returns involve reconciling income and taxes paid, which may result in a refund or an amount owed to the government. A refund occurs when too much has been paid in taxes throughout the year, and the government is giving the overpayment back. An amount owed means that not enough taxes have been paid throughout the year, and the remaining amount must be paid when filing the tax return:
