In a recent episode of the Freedom Chasers podcast, real estate agent and investor Michelle Martin discussed her career and business journey. Michelle shared insights into her experiences as a successful real estate agent, as well as her passion for building real estate teams and systems. She also delved into the importance of finding the right partnership with someone who shares your values and business goals.
Michelle talked about a difficult real estate transaction involving an unethical agent on the other side of the deal. Despite this setback, Michelle has thrived in the real estate industry, although she admitted that she doesn't actually enjoy selling real estate. Instead, she focuses on building successful real estate teams and systems.
The conversation shifted to the role of Inside Sales Agents (Isas) in the real estate business. Michelle emphasized the importance of treating Isas and agents equally, noting that without a skilled Isa to set up appointments, an agent has nothing to work with. Michelle has flipped the traditional commission model by reducing agent commission and increasing Isa commission. While she enjoys the flexibility of being an Isa, she misses the face-to-face interaction of being an agent.
Michelle and her partner merged their real estate businesses, which led to a doubling of their staff. They focused on splitting up roles and delegating responsibilities, with a focus on buyers and sellers, respectively. They also used a showing agent and relied on their team's systems to support them. They made hiring decisions based on shared values, and they prefer to have a team of military spouses who may require flexibility due to deployment.
Michelle discussed her partnership with her colleague in the real estate business. They have an operational mindset and a system in place to work efficiently together. They stay in their lanes of expertise and consult each other on important decisions. The decision to partner came when they both realized they were burnt out and needed to participate more in their home life. They have been more successful and happier since partnering.
Michelle also talked about her interest in real estate investment and how she got into it. She mentioned her plans for the next 12 to 18 months, including bringing on their first Isa and possibly hiring a listing assistant. She also mentioned their focus on generating their own leads and being mindful of the market. If they had unlimited resources, they would travel, write a travel blog, dance, read, and spend time with family.
Michelle emphasized the importance of partnerships, working outside of your market, and taking steps towards freedom and purpose every day. Her success in the real estate industry highlights the importance of finding the right partner, building a solid team, and focusing on your strengths to create a successful business.
