The history of the Academy Awards dates back to 1927, when the first ceremony was held. The award was originally called the "Academy Award of Merit," but it soon became known simply as the Oscar. The statuette itself was designed by Cedric Gibbons, who was the head of the art department at MGM Studios at the time. The original Oscar was made of gold-plated bronze and stood at a height of 13.5 inches.
Over the years, the Oscar has undergone a few changes. In 1983, the statuette was redesigned by R.S. Owens & Company, and the new version was made of gold-plated Britannia metal. The size remained the same, but the weight was reduced from 8.5 pounds to 8.2 pounds.
The current design of the Oscar features a stylized figure of a knight holding a crusader's sword, standing on a reel of film with five spokes. The spokes represent the original branches of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences: actors, directors, producers, technicians, and writers.
As for the cost of the Oscar, it's actually not for sale. The statuettes are only given to winners of the Academy Awards, and they are considered to be priceless. In fact, there is a strict policy that prohibits the sale of Oscars, and winners are required to sign an agreement stating that they will not sell their statuette without first offering it back to the Academy for $1.
