Estimates vary, but somewhere between 1 million and 9 million protestors took to the streets over the weekend in various cities throughout France. The chaos began on January 19th, when French President Macron rammed pension reform legislation through parliament that increased the retirement age from 62 to 64.

Strikes by all of France’s trade unions have been labelled a “rare show of unity”, with transport and energy workers, teachers, dockers and public sector workers having gone on strike. The social anger was fuelled because Macron used special constitutional powers to force the pension reforms through the legislature. This is not the first time Macron has bypassed parliament. Over the last two years, he has pushed forward eleven dictatorial edicts, invoking article 49.3 of the French constitution.
