Spoiler Free Movie Review: Marvel Studios Avengers Infinity War - Does the Mad Titan Build Pay Off?

In this video, we review Marvel's Avengers - Infinity War without any spoilers about the movie itself.

Over the course of several years, Marvel and Disney has been building the road that would eventually take us to where we are now, Thanos the Mad Titan as the proper villain for our favorite heroes to combat. Did it work? Did it not work? was it worth the wait? Well, in a nutshell, yes, no, HELL YES!

Thanos has always been on the outside looking in, the guy "funding" Loki's attempt to conquer the Earth. The guy sending Ronin the Accuser to get the Power Stone. He's been the guy pulling the strings, but now, as seen in a post credit scene, he's doing it himself. And he does so with the gravitas and ass-kicking we've wanted to see out of a serious villain in the MCU.

While this is an ensemble cast I felt like Dr. Strange and Tony Stark stole the show when Thanos wasn't on-screen. This is nothing against the other characters, their story seemed to be the best flushed out and developed. One thing that Disney movies have struggled with in recent years, notably in 2017's The Last Jedi, is having main characters not be consistent with their behavior. Every character, every one, behaved in a believable, realistic and understandable way. Even Thanos, when you see his backstory flushed out (and while short they did give us some much-needed and appreciated backstory) behaves in a way that makes total sense. Yes, actions were surprising, but they weren't out of character. And I loved that!

The overall pacing of the movie was pretty intense. We open in a battle, no credits, no title screen, BOOM, the action is happening. You are wrapped up and taken into the MCU with only a splash of the Marvel Stud10s logo. That's it! The action is fast and fierce, but not exhausting. The battles made sense, you didn't feel like they were out of place or drawn out. They also seemed grounded in reality. Punches had weight. Shots had weight. It felt balanced.

With an ensemble cast you can often feel like your favorites might be left out or not have enough screen time and for several characters, I loved that was definitely the case. I would have liked to have more time with Cap and Bucky, T'Challa too. Part of it is because I really like these characters, but it's also because I love the way these actors PLAY these characters.

This is the best "Empire Strikes Back" since ESB, if that makes sense. You leave the theater with both a sense of dread but also a desire to see what in the world happens next. It is dark and pragmatic movie that, while you may not like actions/characters/events, you can see all sides of how the characters got there and understand things. Where I only saw The Last Jedi once in theaters I can't wait to see Infinity War again at our Drive Inn and the Imax theaters. It's amazing, and I think if you are a MCU fan you'll love it too.
