Back in the day, you wouldn't have found a bigger NASCAR fan than me. I watched every race from the Trucks to the Busch Series, and of course, the Winston Cup. I dove into the world of racing RC Cars because I was such a huge Dale Earnhardt fan, painting up more than my fair share of #3 Goodwrench cars and trucks over the years. I even was the co-host of a NASCAR radio show in my hometown on AM1250 WSSP called Sparky's Final Inspection. When I say I had the NASCAR bug, I had it bad. Yes, I even had the Dale Jr. Nextel phone.
Fast-forward to 2018 and, well, NASCAR just isn't what it was. The racing is stale, the drivers (for the most part) are vanilla, and I've just moved on. But I do still love classic racing games, and Dirt to Daytona is one of my all-time favorites.
Dirt to Daytona came out for the Gamecube, PS2 and XBox, and while I had it for the PS2 and Gamecube the Gamecube version was always my personal favorite. I loved the controller, it just suited my driving style perfectly. And in 2018 I can also get the best graphics ever from a Gamecube thanks to the EON Gaming GCHD HDMI adapter.
What makes Dirt to Daytona such a fun game for me underscores what is missing in NASCAR today, a link to grassroots, local dirt track racing where the drivers were flawed and their cars weren't perfect billboards. In Dirt to Daytona, you are literally trying to establish yourself in a number of different tiers in NASCAR, from the Weekly Dirt series, the Modifieds, Trucks, Grand National and eventually, Cup. Come and be my co-driver and I'll take you to victory lane a few times.
