John Hancock is one of the most passionate gamers and collectors you'll ever meet. He has been working on building his boxed NES collection, which is now complete. He had his collection on display at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, and walking through the display was simply amazing.
Being in a room with every single NES game was truly breathtaking. To quote one of my favorite movies, Brewster's Millions, this is a room I could die in. In addition to John's collection, however, there were a ton of extra items in this room, including something I never thought I would see. I'm talking about the Nintendo Playstation!
The Nintendo Playstation on-site was the one we've all heard so much about, the one that Ben Heck made into a working machine. Terry Diebold, the owner of the system, was on hand and we had a chance to talk with him quite a bit. It was interesting to learn that Nintendo doesn't really acknowledge the existence of the console and they see it as a blight in their history. Sony, on the other hand, sees it as a unique product in their history.
Not only was I able to see the Nintendo Playstation/SNES CD but I was able to play it as well. They had it hooked up and running the Super Famicom version of Super Mario Kart and I have to say it looked glorious! Standard Super Famicom controllers were hooked up and, well, it played like a Super Famicom! I cannot say how cool it was to not only see but touch this piece of prototype Nintendo/Sony video game history.
There were so many other cool bits of history in this room, I'll be posting another video soon just talking about this. From Game and Watches, ROB the Robot, 1990 Nintendo World Championship swag (including the painters-style hat I naively threw away back in the day), this was truly amazing to be in. Additionally, it was a bit awe-inspiring to realize that there was a part of me and this channel was in that room too. One of the new Retro-Bit Holy Diver box sets was on display, and with the shoutout to me and RoXolid Productions in the manual, it was pretty humbling.
I cannot thank John Hancock enough for being so kind and gracious with his time. He's truly an asset to the entire gaming community, not only with his YouTube Channel and the preservation of gaming through his collections but for his charity efforts with the Cowlitz Gamers for Kids convention, also held in the northwest. I will tell you he as kind in-person as he comes across on his channel. Thank you John, I look forward to the next time we meet!
