I admit that I really enjoy playing retro games on clone hardware. They are often less expensive than the original systems, plus feature HDMI outputs for easier connections to your television. This makes it really convenient to bring your past gaming experiences into the present and, if you get the right system, they look darn good. However anytime I post videos on clone consoles there's always the wave of people who poo-poo clones for various reasons. Some feel that unless you're playing on original hardware you're wasting your time. I've not listened to this because the original hardware didn't provide sharp enough pictures. However, thanks to HD Retrovision you can now connect your classic Genesis system to your modern TV via RGB Component Cables. Business is about to pick up!

Before connecting to my TV I performed the test HD Retrovision recommends on their site for compatibility. Unfortunately, my capture card and Element TV failed the test, however, my Samsung 4K Ultra HD TV passed with flying colors. With this knowledge I knew there was one solution I needed, I needed an OSSC to upscale for capturing. Well poop.

I got everything connected and powered on my Model 1 Genesis and man, I was floored. From the first test of Sonic the Hedgehog, the graphics quality was stunning. The sharpness and vibrancy of the colors were stunning, better than I ever expected out of original hardware. I've played games on the Genesis model 1 and 2, Sega CD and even the 32X and everything is just amazingly sharp. I did notice a significant improvement in audio quality when using the headphone jack on the Model 1, and the audio on the Model 1 was higher quality, deeper bass and cleaner overall than the Model 2. Best of all using original hardware means no compatibility issues!

Why it RoX:
- $60 price makes a low barrier to entry
- Amazing audio and video output
- Zero Lag or Latency
- Heavy-duty cables
- Gold plated RCA jacks
- In-line brightness switch
- Makes original hardware worth dusting off

What could be improved:
- No upscaling limits some TV's compatibility
- While $60 is a great price you can get an HDMI SNES Clone for less
- Some newer TVs do not support component video any longer

Should you buy them?
This is pretty much a no-brainer to me if you have a Sega Genesis, Sega CD or 32X you really need to invest in these cables. I was really impressed from the get-go how sharp everything looked and shocked to hear the audio differences between the Model 1 and 2 Genesis systems. It really drove home how much better the Model 1 is than the successor. As long as your TV passes the 240P test I would say there's little reason not to buy these. They're amazing!
