Toys R Us Day 1 of Bankruptcy Liquidation "Sales" - I Find Your Lack of Good Deals Disturbing

In this video we check out they first day liquidation markdowns at our local Toys R Us.

By now we all know about Toys R Us going out of business due to years of excessive debt and poor vendor payments. As such Toys R Us have begin the process of shuttering their stores in the UK first and now in the USA. We visited the Toys R Us in Champaign, Illinois around noon on first day of the liquidation sale to see what deals were to be had. And to be honest, there isn't much here.

Upon walking up to the store I noticed from just a day before that the "10-30% Clearance" banners and "Going Out of Business" sale sign being attached to the front of the building. I also saw people pushing carts with large outdoor play sets to their cars. This gave me hope, however once I entered the store my hopes were dashed.

Walking into the action figures section towards the front of the store there were signs up indicating that all figures were 10% off. Huh, you can get more than 10% off during a standard sale and more than that during Black Friday. OK, I was only a few feet into the store, better stores had to be waiting, right? Right? Wrong!

Going into the video game department all games and accessories were labeled at 10% 0ff; for a $60 game that's a whopping $6. Systems were only 5% off bringing a Nintendo Switch down to $285. Again there were better sales on Black Friday with the XBox One S available in multiple locations for $189, PS4 for $199. Even the XBox One X was only $25 cheaper at $475. This was going nowhere fast.

Walking around the store it was clear that most items were marked down to the 10% mark, few if any were any higher than that. Dolls, bikes, ride-ons, video game accessories all at 10%. The "as seen on TV" items were marked down 20% and gift wrapping and cards were marked down 30%. To quote Austin Powers, "Whooptie Friggen Do Basel!"

As of right now there's no real reason to rush to your local Toys R Us to search for great deals; there aren't any. It's sad to see them going away but, if anything, this sale brings prices down to match what Amazon and Wal-Mart already have pricing-wise. At most if you're interested in fixtures, like I want the Nintendo Switch Fixture, you can go ant talk to them about getting your name on a waiting list for it but know that some vendors may come and collect these displays to re -purpose them and employees get the chance to buy these items before the general public.

Overall I'd give these deals a D- rating. There's not much of a deal or sale here to be found and inventory is still relatively good. Wait a week or two and head back to see if deals improve. But above all please remember to be kind and polite to the employees. These are people with families that are losing their jobs, their incomes. If the company you work for has openings and you meet a great staffer do them a solid and let them know where they can apply.
