Manufacturer's Recommendation: Do NOT Use 3rd Party Docks with Nintendo Switch Firmware 5 0

In this video we discuss reports of Nintendo Switch owners with firmware 5.0 indicating using 3rd party docks bricked their Switch and one manufacturer's actions to address the situation.

One great thing about the Nintendo Switch has been the option to take it anywhere and play. One bummer is that to connect to different televisions you need to either drag your dock around with you or purchase another dock to have it connected to another television.

Aftermarket manufacturers have stepped up since late 2017 with less expensive docks, and to be honest most are pretty solid. However there are recent reports that there's a bug in Firmware 5.0 that causes the Switch to lock up when connected to a non-Nintendo dock. Some have indicated that this is just the result of bad code in the firmware. Others are claiming this a deliberate attempt by Nintendo to brick consoles that are connected to non-Nintendo docks.

One manufacturer recently reached out to the channel to indicate they have pulled their dock from their own website and have temporarily stopped selling their dock out of concern. They have tested their dock themselves in-office and not had issues but they feel the issue is real and don't want their product to place a customer at risk.

What do I think? I don't think this is a deliberate action by Nintendo. Let's face it, unless you bought a Switch within the first month or two of its life cycle people are still covered by the 1-year manufacturer's warranty. With that understood if this were a deliberate move by Nintendo and users had issues Nintendo would have to pay to repair or replace user's Switch systems AT THEIR COST. I think it is an unfortunate coincidence but that's all there is to it. After all if this was deliberate action by Nintendo they would totally be susceptible to a pretty severe class action lawsuit. And, while Nintendo has made Virtual Boy-level mistakes to market in the past I don't think there's any maliciousness in this issue. But the onus is on Nintendo to address this sooner than later.
