Nintendo and Sony have a very intertwined relationship. From the Sound Chip in the Super NES and the never-realized SNES Play Station CD add-on, they have been the best of frienemies for 25 years. With the Nintendo NES and Super NES Classics being wildly popular since their launches in 2016 and 2017, Sony has now decided to get in on the action with their own machine, the Sony PlayStation Classic.

The system was announced in the very early hours of the morning on 9/19/18. less than 8-hours after Nintendo's much-anticipated Switch Online Service finally went live in the USA. The system is stated to be 45% the size of the original system, include an HDMI output, two controllers, USB Power, and 20 pre-loaded games. From the initial announcement we learned that five confirmed titles include:

Final Fantasy VII
Jumping Flash
Ridge Racer Type 4
Tekken 3
Wild Arms

The PlayStation Classic will also include 2 wired controllers, but to some player's disappointment, the controllers are copies of the original Playstation controllers and not the analog-stick equipped dual-shock controllers. I'm ok with this, many games of this era on the console actually were better when played with a regular D-Pad versus the analog stick. At this time, most games were developed with a D-pad in-mind and it wasn't until the N64's analog stick changed the game.

The video output of the PlayStation Classic features an HDMI output capable of 720P video output. I'm a bit surprised Sony didn't opt for 1080P, but then again Nintendo's systems are locked in at 720P as well. Monkey see monkey do. There is an included HDMI cable, along with a USB cable for power. Much like the Famicom and Super Famicom Minis in Japan, the PlayStation Classic omits an included AC Adapter, and there are a few reasons for this. First of all getting a device like this though compliance testing is a LOT easier if you do not include the power supply. You can also sell the same unit in the USA AND EU without a power supply if you desire. Finally, omitting the power supply reduces costs and, hopefully, that cost reduction gets passed on to the consumers.

As of the day after the system was announced pre-orders have opened up at both Gamestop and Best Buy in the USA. The PlayStation Classic will be launching on 12/3/18 for $99.99. We have pre-ordered a system for the channel and, once it starts to ship, we will be featuring unboxing and review videos here on the channel. I'm excited for this system to start shipping so we can test it out and see how things come together. I know a few have their doubts about this system but, knowing the quality of the PlayStation 1 library, I have confidence that the other 15 games will be AAA titles. For $100 I think it is a bit overpriced with what we currently know, however, if the games are great it will justify the price. I, for one, cannot wait for December 3 to get here to play the PlayStation Classic Edition!
