Since picking up a Nintendo Switch Lite, I've actually been playing it more than I thought I would. I'm not a handheld player, by-and-large, but this is a really nice way to enjoy my games. One issue I have is that I suffer from a touch of arthritis and tendonitis in my right thumb, which really limits the time I can spend playing handhelds due to pain. Enter the Protective Grip Case from Hyperkin, available in three different colors, designed to give your Switch Lite a little more to hold on to and provide some protection at the same time.
The Protective Grip case is available in yellow, grey/transparent and blue, all colors designed to accent whatever color Switch Lite you happen to own. Yes, you can mix & match colors, but just don't, ok? The case itself is made from a rubber compound, similar to the TPU material many cell phone cases are made out of. It's thin, lightweight, & should prove to be pretty durable. Additionally, there are two humps molded into the back of the case on either side, similar to what Hyperkin has done with their Scout or Cadet controllers. At least for me, this adds the right amount of thickness to the Switch Lite to make it more playable given my right thumb issues.
Inside the case itself, it actually has 2 molded-in storage compartments. These are designed to hold two different Switch Games securely. What I appreciated about this was not only the storage but how it stored the games. The games are not flush against the back of the system, so any heat generated has a chance to escape instead of being directed towards the cartridge labels. Why this matters is heat can break down adhesives, meaning your cartridge labels could possible come of. This design eliminates that.
The overall case is smooth and sleek, however, I did discover one minor issue near the LR/RR triggers. Where the molds come together for the front & rear half of the case comes to a point right there, leaving a bit of a sharp edge. It won't cut you or anything, but I did notice it. I simply trimmed that little point off with a hobby knife & was good to go.
Why it RoX!
- Available in colors to match your Switch Lite
- Under $15
- Cartridge storage
- Grip handles are very comfortable (for me)
- Provides some protection against minor wear & tear
- Easy to install & remove
What Could Be Improved?
- Cannot charge using Nintendo's Adjustable Charging Stand with this installed
- Sharp edges from molding process near triggers
- More color options would be nice
Should You Buy One?
If you have kids who play your Switch Lite, if you wish your Switch Lite were a little thicker & more substantial to hold onto this is a really nice case. The molded ribs inside the grips should ensure they won't collapse over time, & the overall design is well thought out and feels great in the hand. I recently played through Super Mario Odyssey again, and I played 75% of the game on my Switch Lite using the Protective Grip Case. My hand & thumb didn't fatigue like when I normally play in handheld mode on my original Switch, which is a great thing. Add in the 2 cartridge slots & you have a really versatile little case. Since getting this, my Switch Lite has lived in the turquoise Grip Case, it's just that comfortable for me to use.
