Should You Buy the Retro Fighters BrawlerGen Wired 2-in-1 Genesis, Mega Drive, & Saturn Controller?
In this video, we unbox and test out the Retro Fighters BrawlerGen 2-In-1 controller for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Saturn, and other Sega Consoles.
Ever since I first learned about Retro Fighters, I have been a fan of their products. Their original Brawler64 really changed the game in many ways for how you played the Nintendo 64. In 2019, they announced a two-in-one controller that would be compatible with both the Sega Genesis and the Sega Saturn. Well, that's the controller you see here today, the BrawlerGen 2-in-1.
The BrawlerGen 2-in-1 is available from CastlemaniaGames. Out of the box, you get a pretty unique controller for your Sega Genesis, Mega Drive, and Sega Saturn. Additionally, you can also use it with the Sega Master System, Sega CD, and the 32X.
While the layout and design is unique looking, it does have your typical Sega controls. Your d-pad is here, ABC, XYZ buttons, but Retro Fighters also did some pretty cool things with this controller. In addition to the d-pad, which is patterned after the d-pad on the 6 button Genesis controller, there's also an analog stick! That's pretty cool! in addition to that, if you do want to use this with emulators, retro pies, or other systems, there's also an L & R trigger on the top of the controller.
The fit and finish of the BrawlerGen is very good. It reminds me a lot of the Brawler 64, however it does feel considerably lighter in the hand. Additionally, the controller has a bit of a textured finish on it, which feels really good. It's a little odd that there's so much dead space in the face of the controller, they definitely could have put their logo here or something.
A 10ft cable comes standard, and thankfully I think 10 feet is pretty much getting to be the standard with any wired controller these days. This means I can sit on my couch and play my system without having to use an extension cable. That's really nice.
The placement of the analog stick is rather interesting to me.
Why It RoX:
- Compatible with every Sega Home Console minus the Dreamcast
- 10ft Long Cable
- Analog stick is extremely accurate
- Comfortable design
- L & R Triggers are awesome feeling
- Great build quality
What could be improved?
- Additional color options would be nice
- A wireless option would be great
- The looks may turn some off, but it is very comfortable to hold
- Turbo functionality would be cool
- A little pricey
Should You Buy One?
Overall, I think this is another very good controller from Retro Fighters. The precision and compatibility are both excellent. While many may use the D-Pad, I thought the analog stick was the way to play for me across the board. I love that Castlemania Games now has both the 2-in-1 and USB versions, and if this is any indication, the future is very bright for Retro Fighters!
