More Hyperkin Retron SQ Woes - Earthworm Jim for Game Boy Advance BROKEN #Shorts

In this #YouTube #Shorts episode, I share the woes I went through regarding trying to play Earthworm Jim on the Retron SQ from Hyperkin.

Anyone who knows me knows I am a huge fan of Earthworm Jim 1 and 2. I own it for the Super Nintendo, I own it for the Sega Genesis, I even bought a PAL version when I was in Germany in 2018! As such it is a game that I love playing whenever I get the opportunity. I recently updated the firmware to the day one patch, or at least I tried to, for the Hyperkin Retron SQ and wanted to try out Earthworm Jim for the Game Boy Advance. It's not the best version of the game, but it's definitely fun. Well, things didn't go so well.

The ROM never loads properly into the system, meaning the results are glitched out throughout the entire thing. I thought at first maybe it was just the title screen, but it turns out that the system makes the game completely unplayable. The emulation of the Retron SQ just isn't up to the task of EWJ, which leaves me confused.

I haven't played this cartridge in some time, so I decided to test it in my Game Boy Player for my Nintendo Gamecube. I put the cart in, fired up the system, and as you can see here, it works perfectly. I was glad to see my game cartridge worked fine, but was disappointed to see that Earthworm Jim was simply not compatible with the Retron SQ. I know the GBA software is Beta, but this is the first game I've tried that was broken on the system.

Hyperkin has released their day one patch for the Retron SQ, and I will say I cannot get it to load to the SD card. I have shared my experiences with the product support team over there, and to this point I have not heard back. I believe these are now shipping, which if that is the case, I would advise against purchasing for the time being. The Retron SQ is not ready for prime time and I would hate to see anyone waste their money on something that did not deliver the promise as advertised.
