As my collection grows, I continually run out of space to store my stuff. I've actually started to downsize some of my larger items, and have relegated other pieces of my collection to totes out in my garage or in my attic. Part of the reason to have a collection is to display it. Running out of room is a real issue for a lot of collectors, that's why when I heard about the Retro Game Stands from Syncoplay I had to back it on Kickstarter.
The idea behind these game stands is quite simple. The goal was to create a high quality cartridge display stand for your favorite game consoles, and display the label off of every cartridge. Those of you who also collect in 64 games know the struggles of displaying your games in a way that you can actually tell what the games are, thanks to the omission of a spine label. The Retro Game Stands store six different cartridges at any one time, from the NES and Super NES, to the Genesis, Master System, N64, and more. If handhelds are your thing, he also offers a set of stands specifically sized and styled for Game Boy and Game Gear games.
I backed the project in August 2020 and my box arrived in April of 2021. I didn't know if I'd have to do any assembly or anything along those lines, and was glad to see that the stands were one solid piece right out of the box. Where in the past they had done 3D printed stands, these were now injection molded. At 14.5cm centimeters tall and 14.5cm deep, they take up a decent amount of space, but save more space than what they take up
The four pack of stands that I ordered means that I can now store and display two dozen of my favorite games. I can mix and match different genres, franchises, and systems if I would like. The one thing that I did notice about these was that centering the games is not always as precise as I would like. Sometimes things were to the left or to the right more than I would have liked.
Why it RoX:
- Cleans up your game display
- You can fit more games into a smaller area
- Options for home console and handheld games
- Different color options
- I can finally display N64 games and see what they are
- Quality material
What could be improved:
- No way to really center your games automatically
- Relies on securing your game by the contacts
- More color options would be nice
- A flat base versus the ridged base would be nice
Should you buy these?
If you are like me and you have a larger collection, the Syncoplay Retro Game Stands will definitely save you storage space. They're designed well, you can see the labels easily, and if you're selling items at convention this is a great way to display your table. Take your time when mounting the cartridge in the stand to ensure that they are centered, and beyond that you should not have any issues. The molded composite has enough give designed to it that I am not worried about it damaging or marring the pins of my games at all. I'm glad that I back this, only now I wish I would have gotten a larger pack.
