Play Japanese Nintendo DS Games On American DS, DSi, & 3DS!

Did you know that the Nintendo DS game library is region-free and you can play Japanese games on American consoles? It's true! That's why I just ordered several games from Japan Retro Direct, including Yoshi's Island DS. Let's take a look.

For starters, Nintendo Handhelds are by-and-large region-free. This means that you can play Japanese and American Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and DS games on both US and American systems. This means that you can easily play games that either don't need any language translation, feature multiple language options, or games we didn't get here in the USA on practically any NTSC systems. That really broadens your library options!

I've ordered from Japan Retro Direct for years, including games for the Famicom, Super Famicom, and Nintendo 64, but I've never ordered any handheld titles from them before. Kevin, aka Vinnk from @FamicomDojo lives in Japan and runs the online store, delivering great titles at reasonable prices and shipping around the world. I've always had great luck with my orders from him, and this was no exception.

All the games played perfectly in my systems, and I was actually pleasantly surprised to see that the DS game also worked in my NEW Nintendo 3DS! I know 3DS games ARE region locked, so this was terrific to see and something I didn't expect.
