Lecture 1 - Founding the Colonies
"The way to Heaven is ascending; we must be content to travel uphill, though it be hard and tiresome, and contrary to the natural bias of our flesh.” -Jonathan Edwards
The rapid rise to economic and political power of thirteen loosely connected colonies is one of history's greatest anomalies. What can explain this incredible transformation and how is it connected to the sun finally setting on the British empire?
We'll examine the history from the initial contact of Columbus and the people of "Columbia" through the second wave of colonization that set the United States on a path to civil war and then global hegemony.
Our discussion continues by backfilling the history of "The West" as it's presently understood and why most modern descriptions fail to tell the entire story.
