Attorney Douglas Hibbard is currently in Eureka, California working a case. He's not feeling well and just wants to go back to his wife, Carol, to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. He informs her that due to his condition, he will not be able to make the five-hour drive home and will spend the night. Nonetheless, he will be home for their anniversary the next day.

Douglas pulls into a small motel and asks Harold, the owner, for a quiet room. He finds it difficult to sleep due to his flu and heads to reception to ask for directions to the nearest drug store.

After some time, Douglas comes back to the hotel, drenched and covered in mud, looking even worse than before. He places a bag on the counter and asks Harold to store it in the hotel safe for him. When Harold inquires about what's inside, Douglas ignores him and walks away as if in a daze.

Harold, curious about the situation, stores the bag as instructed, but he finds it strange that Douglas's car is nowhere to be seen in the carpark.
The phone rings, and It's Carol, worried as she has been trying to call Douglas's cellphone with no response. Harold tries to call Douglas's room, but there's no answer. Harold goes to Dougs room and is surprised to find that Douglas is not in his room, nor are there any signs of the wet and muddy clothes he was wearing earlier.

As Harold makes his way back to the front desk, he's greeted by the sheriff, who informs Harold that Douglas is d3ad and they found his hotel room key at the crash site. Harold tells the sheriff that he saw Douglas just a few minutes ago. However, the sheriff implies that the accident happened over an hour ago and that they had just towed Douglas's car with him still inside.

Harold opens the safe for Carol, who has arrived to pick up her husband's belongings. Inside the bag is a ring that Douglas couldn't afford when they first got married. He had promised Carol that he would buy it for her as an anniversary present someday.
