John Mullan for Billerica School Committee 2023

My name is John Mullan. I am A candidate for the Billerica School Committee. I am a lifelong resident of Billerica. I went to both BMHS and Shawsheen Tech. I am a graduate of the USAF Security Police Academy, a graduate of USAF Air Base Ground Defense School, S.W.A.T. trained by the FBI, and a former Tactical Neutralization Team Member. I recently retired after 32 years with the Boston Police Department. I hold two degrees, one in business Management, and the other in Criminal Justice.

The reason I have decided to enter the race is that I have had issues with the Billerica School management in the past, and with the latest debacle, the school committee bringing in Monica Cannon Grant as a speaker for Black History Month. Hardly a person to be held up for the children to emulate. Then the School committee added insult to injury by lying to the people who employ them about inviting the speaker in. This appears to be an agenda-driven issue by the people who are running the school department. I have seen a video apology and an apology letter on this issue and I found them both arrogant and dismissive. It is clear to me that the school board and some others in positions of power feel they are not accountable to the parents of the Billerica students. This is totally unacceptable.

I feel I can bring my management and people skills to the table to try and fix the problems I am seeing, returning power over school decisions and curriculum back to the parents. I am not happy with our children's scores, Slightly above the state average, especially with the amount of money that is being spent on the kids. We need to get back to teaching the kids the 3 Rs and stop indoctrinating them with political agendas, regardless of how well-intended they might be.
