BEFORE leading the UConn Huskies to the Sweet 16 of the 2023 March Madness tournament, collegiate basketball player Adama Sanogo was born on February 12th, 2002 to Awa Traore and Cheickne Sanogo in the city of Bamako, Mali. Adama Sanogo spent the first fourteen-years of his life in Mali, living with his parents alongside his five older sisters and one younger brother, while learning to speak three languages, French, Arabic, and his native tongue of Bambara. Like most kids growing up in his home country, Adama was encouraged to play soccer from a young age and he never picked up a basketball until 2014, when he was already twelve years old. It was around that point in his life that Adama underwent a growth spurt and everyone around him began begging him to forget about soccer and to start playing basketball. Eventually, Adama became enticed by the idea himself and moved to the United States to pursue a potential career in the sport, leaving his family behind in Mali because they were simply too poor to accompany him on his journey.
